International Association of Youth and Family Judges and Magistrates, XVI World Congress 2002

Description of Client

This congress was an historic event in Australian and New Zealand judicial history. Under the auspices of the International Association of Youth and Family Judges and Magistrates the Congress was co-hosted and sponsored by the Family Court of Australia, the Federal Magistrates' Service (Australia), the Children's Court of Victoria (Australia), the Magistrates' Court of Victoria (Australia), the Family Court of New Zealand and the Youth Court of New Zealand.

The central theme of the conference was "Forging the Links".  The structure of the legal system into which children, youth and families may be thrust has long been the subject of international debate. To some, the system appears fragmented and impossibly complex.

The aim of the Congress was to assemble people from all over the world active in the protection of youth and the family to consider issues, which fall within the realm of family courts and youth courts.

The International Association of Youth and Family Judges and Magistrates (IAYFJM) is a non-government organisation with consultative status at the United Nations.  Founded in 1928, it has its seat in Geneva, Switzerland.  It represents worldwide efforts to deal with family matters and the protection of children and young people and their families, and with the criminal behaviour and developmental and adjustment problems of youth.
